Ergonomics - Making Your Work Cubicle More Comfortable

By: Matthew Hick

Just because you're stuck in a work cubicle eight or more hours a day doesn't mean you have to be uncomfortable, or risk a work-related injury. There are a lot of ways to make your workspace more ergonomic to avoid unnecessary injury.

Three of the main things to keep in mind when trying to create a more comfortable work station are:

Your Chair.
This is the most important component of your office. To relieve (or even prevent) back strain and pain, be sure to use a chair that features good lower-back support and a lot of adjustability. Stability balls are also a great choice for people by providing a more "active" chair that requires you to keep making minute adjustments to keep your balance.

Your Lighting.
Eyestrain can lead to stress in the workplace. Be sure that your work area is well lit and that your computer screen is free of glare. Install a separate cubicle light if necessary.

Your Posture.
The way you sit can have a direct effect on the way you feel physically by the end of the day. Always strive to sit upright with your elbows and knees bent at 90 degrees. Keep your feet flat on the floor. If they are bent at more than 90 degrees, you may have to raise your desk height. And, if it is already too high consider using a footrest to maintain the correct posture.

Even if you aren't worried about workplace injury, you can make your days more comfortable by installing a few simple ergonomic designs into yr office or cubicle. Try these for a less stressful day:

A Good Computer Monitor.
Nothing is more annoying than working on a flickering or glaring computer screen all day. Reduce eyestrain and fatigue by installing a larger (at least 17 inches) monitor that features a flicker-less screen glare filter.

While you're at it, why not consider installing a good quality copy holder to help you better see your reference materials while working at the computer, and maintain good posture while typing?

Keyboards.
Using a ergonomic keyboard is essential to eliminate back and neck pain, not t mention wrist and joint problems in your hands, wrists and fingers.

Telephone Stand.
Using a simple phone stand not only clears your desk, but also places your phone in an accessible position. This type of stand usually features a collapsible arm that can be pulled closer and a pan tilt that allows you to grab the handset and view the keypad without craning your neck.
